WHAT IS THIS WEBSITE, AND WHY AM I HERE?

This website features works of original fiction written by me.

You are either here because you're interested in finding new, interesting stories to read, or because you've somehow become lost during a search for pornography gone horribly wrong.

HOW MUCH DO THE STORIES COST?

On the Free Stories page you will find a rotating selection of free complete stories. You can also browse free first chapter previews of novellas and novelettes available in full for Amazon's Kindle reader. (For pricing and details on Kindle editions please see my Amazon Author Profile.)

WHERE DO THE STORIES COME FROM?

I write them. I do so because it is the most economical method I know for carrying an idea from genesis to execution. I tried making independent films for a while but it took too long to raise the money and organize everything, limiting me to exorcising just a handful of ideas per decade. In contrast, writing affords me the ability to give form to dozens and dozens of ideas each year, without wasting precious creation time raising funds.

WHAT SORTS OF STORIES CAN I FIND HERE?

While I dabble in several genres, reader requests lean heavily toward speculative fiction and scifi. I write whatever I feel like, but I often feel like giving people what they want, so the net result is that there are a lot of stories here about robots, spaceships and galactic colonization with the occasional bit of historical romance, fantasy or satire thrown in for good measure.

DO I HAVE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THIS WEBSITE TO ACCESS THE STORIES?

There are no memberships. Complete stories on the Free Stories page are open to the public at no charge and, where applicable, subject to a Creative Commons licence. Full novellas and novelettes for the Kindle reader cost between $0.99 and $2.99 and are available from Amazon Author Central (all transactions handled securely by Amazon) and Smashwords.

If you would like to leave a comment about a currently running serial, you may use a free Blogger account or you may leave comments anonymously if you don't have a Blogger or Google account.

If you would like to buy a printed edition of one of my novels or anthologies, you will need to sign up for a free Lulu account (all transactions are handled securely by Lulu). The current print edition of Simon of Space is sold through CreateSpace.

If you would like to leave a tip in the virtual tip jar, you can choose to do so with a PayPal account or with a major credit card (all transactions are handled securely by PayPal and/or eBay).

ARE YOUR STORIES APPROPRIATE FOR YOUNGER READERS?

In general, yes -- however, there are some exceptions. While none of my stories is graphically sexual or choked with detailed descriptions of unmentionably savage acts, some do contain elements some parents may consider objectionable for preteen readers.

All stories containing profanity, violence, adult situations or mature themes have a warning at the beginning of the text of the first chapter explicitly flagging potentially upsetting elements. Stories that lack such a content note can be considered appropriate for all audiences capable of reading them.

If you discover an unflagged instance of profanity, violence, adult situations or mature themes please make me aware of the lapse and it will be promptly corrected.

HOW OFTEN DO NEW STORIES APPEAR?

The schedule is variable, reflecting the negative space in my familial and professional obligations. While I strive to post new chapters at least a few times each month, sometimes life gets in the way. The easiest way to keep abreast of the latest developments is to subscribe to my blog's RSS feed.

DOES YOUR BLOG HAVE AN RSS FEED?

Yes. This one.

CAN I RECEIVE NEW STORY NOTICES VIA E-MAIL?

You sure can. Use the form below. Your e-mail address will not be harvested, shared or sold to any third party, ever.

HAVE ANY OF YOUR NOVELS OR STORIES BEEN TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED?

Yes. My novel Simon of Space was released in a limited edition hardcover from American publisher Ephemera Bound in 2008.

The storySouth Million Writers Award notable story of 2011 Last Words was published in "AE: The Canadian Science-Fiction Review" in 2011.

My short story Thin Air was bought by "Stupefying Stories" in 2012, and dozens of my flash fiction tales have appeared in the pages of "Footprints" magazine since 2006.

The rest of my canon is self-published via Amazon and Smashwords.

MAY I CONVERT YOUR STORIES FOR EASY READABILITY ON MY CHOSEN DEVICE?

Yes, you may convert any free story on the site provided that you do not remove any of the legally important bits like attribution to the creator and copyright notices, that you do not re-distribute the work, and provided you send a copy to me so that I can make it available to other people who share your device or reading preferences. To access non-free stories please see my Amazon inventory (for Kindle editions) or my Smashwords page (for all other eBook platforms).

HOW DO I REPORT A PROBLEM?

Problems of any kind -- broken links, malformed pages, typing errors, intellectual property grievances, requests, criticisms and demands -- can be reported directly to me via e-mail.

ISN'T IT CRAZY TO GIVE AWAY THE PRODUCTS OF YOUR HARD WORK FOR FREE?

Yes, it sort of is. I am a storyteller, not a businessman. I do my truck in engagement and entertainment, and I don't concern myself with much beyond that. However, if you happen to be a businessman or businesswoman who believes you can profitably exploit my talent, please don't hesitate to make your pitch.

DO YOU HAVE REAL JOB?

Yes. Just don't tell anyone I work with that I secretly spend most of my days writing about robots, spaceships and galactic colonization. Especially my boss. Please don't tell that guy. He'd lay an egg.

ARE 'CHEESEBURGER BROWN' AND/OR 'CHESTER BURTON BROWN' PSEUDONYMS?

Yes, they are. I follow in a fine tradition of profesionally respectable people preserving their dignity by putting out pulp fiction under a pen name, like Cordwainer Smith, Richard Cowper, Theodore Sturgeon or Kilgore Trout.

WHO DRAWS THE ILLUSTRATIONS THAT ACCOMPANY THE STORIES?

Matthew Hemming of Very Good Studios. Prints of his illustrations and covers will be available to purchase in the near future.
